Another Chinese car brand confirmed for Australia this year! Upmarket Xpeng electric automaker to have Tesla Model Y challenging G6 SUV on sale before the end of 2024

Xpeng will debut with its G6 electric mid-size SUV

Xpeng is the latest in a torrent of new automakers from China to announce it will launch in Australia before the end of 2024.

The announcement comes just a day after GAC also confirmed its intention to launch in Australia in 2024, and barely a week after Geely’s intention to set up an Australian operation was unveiled by local job listings.

It will make the Tesla-rivalling Xpeng the eighth Chinese car maker on sale in Australia, as it no doubt wants a slice of the success currently being enjoyed by MG, LDV, GWM, Chery, and BYD.

Xpeng, unlike MG, GWM and Chery, will be distributed rather than factory-backed.

New player - TrueEV - is the importer of Xpeng and currently provides trade-in and resale services, as well as financing solutions specifically for electric vehicles. It also plans to launch an “Online EV marketplace” via its retail company, CarQU and rental company, EV2Rent.

TrueEV confirmed it will launch the Xpeng brand with its G6 SUV, which launched in China in 2023. The G6 is a mid-size sports luxury SUV that is based on the brand’s SEPA2.0 platform and said to be the basis for its global vehicles going forward.

It has two battery options, a long range 66kWh version allowing 580km of driving range on the more lenient CLTC measuring standard, and a super long range 87.5kWh version offering 755km of cruising range.

Chinese market versions are also offered in either RWD (218kW/440Nm) or all-wheel drive (358kW/660Nm), although the all-wheel drive sits atop the range as a performance variant available exclusively with the super long range battery. It can travel 700km between charges.

It has an ultra-low drag coefficient of 0.248Cd with claimed energy consumption as low as 13.2kWh/100km. It also claims a 50:50 front-rear axle load ratio and can accelerate from 0-100km/h in as little as 3.9 seconds.

It is very similar in size to the Tesla Model Y, although it offers an 800-volt battery architecture, which it claims can add 300km of range in just five minutes thanks to its peak charging speed of 280kW. This rivals some of the fastest charging EVs on sale such as the Kia EV9. In China it is both more powerful and more affordable than the RWD Model Y, figures that its importer will no doubt seek to replicate in Australia.

Inside, the G6 offers a minimalistic design, with a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster and a 14.96-inch multimedia touchscreen as well as synthetic leather and suede trims with heated functions for the seats and steering wheel. It can also fold its front seats fully flat to make for a more flexible interior space.

Xpeng is a private company founded by former executives of GAC, which is seen as a primary rival to Tesla in China, and a contemporary to other similar EV start-ups like Nio.

In its home market the G6 mid-size SUV is offered alongside the P5 and P7 sedans, G9 large SUV and X9 people mover.
