2020 motorcycle and ATV sales surge as pandemic quells new car interest

Off-road bikes are now the most popular motorcycle segment, according for nearly 40 per cent of the overall market.

Motorcycle and ATV sales have jumped a massive 24.5 per cent to 52,839 sales in the first half of 2020, a stark contrast to new vehicle numbers dropping 20.2 per cent over the same period.

Leading the charge are the ATV and off-road segments, accounting for 14,545 and 20,885 year-to-date sale respectively, a sizable 50.9 and 42.4 per cent spike over the same period last year.

Road bikes and scooters however, have dropped 2.7 and 12.8 per cent of sales so far this year, down to 15,243 and 2166 units apiece.

FCAI boss Tony Weber said the Coronavirus pandemic has likely boosted the popularity of off-road bikes, while ATV sales are also encouraged by a tax stimulus.

“We believe that, instead of spending up big on expensive family vacations, people are treating themselves in different ways – and this could mean they are taking up new sports like trail bike riding,” he said.

“ATVs and SSVs are also popular, and we understand this is due to the government’s instant asset write-off program which makes the purchase of farm machinery and equipment very attractive at the present time.”

The overall most popular brand after six months of trading continues to be Honda (12,563 sales, +22.3%), though Yamaha (12,344, +37.8%) is quickly closing the gap.

Kawasaki (6545, +44.4%), KTM (4391, +32.7%) and Suzuki (3594, +8.2%) round out the top five brands, with each increasing their market share.
