When Peter Brock showed the Poms some Aussie muscle at Goodwood

It’s that time of year again when a large selection of classic race cars and supercars come together at the Goodwood Festival of Speed for people to froth over.

Each year there’s always a standout from the event, but we can’t go past 2005, when Peter Brock took his ’84 Bathurst winning Holden VK Commodore to show the Poms some Aussie muscle.

The King of the Mountain’s first run at the 1.9km hillclimb didn’t disappoint, as Brock finished the run in 58.68sec.

This was the fourth quickest time behind way more powerful cars such as a Jaguar XJR12 prototype and a Tyrell 006 F1 racer.

His final run was slower, but was still the fifth-fastest time of the day.

Brock returned to the event the following year, racing a ‘lofty’ FJ Holden against a swarm of Jaguars and Austins. He finished fourth in a soaking wet race.

This was the last time Brock took part of the Goodwood Festival of Speed as sadly, when he returned to Australia the following week, he died while participating in the Targa West.
