What's that? You wanted a speedo mounted in your Model 3? Tough luck, you'll get nothing

By Tom WhiteTom White

Elon Musk puts the slam-down on Twitter user who reckons a real dashboard might go alright in a Model 3.

Turns out, if you like more traditional dash elements in your car, the future simply won't wait for you. At least thats what Elon Musk has to say.

In his tweets, he makes it clear that he thinks the central screen will suffice and that the autonomous features will be so seamless that "you won't care."

Jeez, I dont know Elon. I can't think of the last time centrally mounted dash elements really worked for anyone. The not-so great execution in the Mini Cooper comes to mind.

Yeah, no thanks bro. Even Mini fixed this.

Yeah, no thanks bro. Even Mini quickly fixed this piece of backward design in no time.

For obvious reasons too, anything that makes you take your eyes that far off the road when you're in control of a vehicle is a big no-no.

It's extra bad in Australia, where the local authorities are so obsessed with minor speed infringements that having a constant, large and bold readout of your speed at any given time is simply a must.

That's not going to stop Musk from taking it away from prospective Model 3 buyers. I suppose the future stops for noone. Musk is clearly of the opinion that simple human needs won't be relevant for too much longer in his slick, autonomous Silicon-Valley version of future mobility.

Doesn't get more direct than that.

Yep. Doesn't get more direct than that.

Musk also mentions in the exchange that there will be no option for a head-up display either. Likely a cost-cutting measure, given the focus seems be on stuffing most-if-not-all of the Model S's autonomous tech into the 3.

All of this simply equates to bad news for the driver. How much will Tesla be willing to strip from the driver experience to ensure that the fancy future stuff can be delivered at the right price point? Only time will tell.

What do you think? Still hyped for the Model 3?
