What do children's books have to do with a 224kW Yaris rally car? Nothing... until now

By Richard BerryRichard Berry

Where do foxes go during the day? How many leaves are there on a tree? What’s it like to ride in a 224kW Toyota Yaris rally car at full bore through a forest? We were able to answer at least one of these questions when I met Australian Rally Championship star Harry Bates ahead of the South Australian round of the ARC.

Believe it or not the Yaris which Bates debuted at Rally SA used to be one of those pathology delivery cars, but all that remains of that past life now is really just the shell.

Built to AP4 regulations the Yaris has a 1.6-litre twin-cam 2ZZ-GE turbo-petrol engine making 224kW/420Nm with the drive being sent to all four wheels through a Sadev six-speed sequential gearbox. Four-piston AP-Racing calipers and 300mm x 30mm provide huge stopping power.

  • Not your standard Yaris engine. Not your standard Yaris engine.
  • Standard features include a fire extinguisher and that's about it. Standard features include a fire extinguisher and that's about it.

Bates has only been racing for two years, but at 22 years old he’s the youngest, most winingest driver in ARC history – but how much does he know about the natural world?

Confused? So was Harry when we decided to test his knowledge of nature from a children’s book… at full-speed on a Rally SA stage.

What would you like to ask Harry? Tell us in the comments.
