Remember when Land Rover restored someone's 1957 Series 1 for Valentine's Day?

By James LisleJames Lisle

What's the best thing you've done for someone on Valentine's Day?

Given them breakfast in bed? Dinner by candlelight? Sent a huge bouquet of flowers to their work in order to make their colleagues feel horribly dejected?

As much as I like the latter, Land Rover topped everyone else's attempts at affection in 2015 when it secretly purchased a much-loved 1957 Land Rover Series 1 just to hand it back to the owner(s) post-resto.

Story goes: four Otago University students bought the Series 1 to travel around in and work on, but matrimonial commitments later forced them to put the tired Landy in storage.

As much as the Kiwis loved their car, they decided that their 38kW beastie had to be sold.

Luckily though, their rather pitiful advertisement caught the eye of Land Rover itself, and with the help of Custom Metalshapers in New Zealand, the rugged 'Landy' was restored back to its former glory.

Not that this is a new thing for Land Rover, with their huge Jaguar Land Rover Classic Works facility restoring and maintaining some pretty cool stuff.

Check out the video below for a more in-depth look at the restoration.
