Old meets new: The BMW E90 with the heart of an E30

Nothing is cooler than putting an old school race engine into a touring car.

Seeing a BMW E90 3-Series in Euro race-spec, you may assume that under the hood lies the familiar 1.6-litre, turbocharged, four-cylinder found in the BMW 320 TC for the World Touring Car Championships (WTCC).

However, this particular 3-Series is a bit different as power comes from an S14 engine usually found in an E30 M3.

Making this engine swap even more remarkable is this isn’t your standard 2.3-litre inline four, the engine is taken from a classic E30 DTM race car.

While the engine makes 238kW (320hp) - which is only about 7.5kW more than normal - that doesn't seem like much of an advantage to merit a complete engine swap. But hey, the noise more than makes up for it.

Especially when the car needs to be revved up to 8200rpm to deliver peak power.

The car currently competes in the WTCC against the likes of Porsches and Radicals with Vincenzo Cencini behind the steering wheel.
