We turn the spotlight on the car world's newest and brightest stars as we ask the questions to which you want the answers. But there's only one question that really needs answering -- would you buy one?

WHAT IS IT?

The 118 TSI is the entry level, two-wheel drive version of what is in effect VW's off road Golf, although few people are likely to  actually take one off road. It's more about their rugged looks and better view of the traffic from the elevated driver's position.

HOW MUCH?

Prices start from $28,490 for the manual or $30,990 for the recently introduced auto, a six-speed DSG twin-clutch style manumatic. There's diesel and petrol options, with the top of the line model commanding upwards of $42,990.

WHAT ARE COMPETITORS?

The compact SUV segment is one of the most hotly contested sections of the Australian market, with numerous competitors Skoda Yeti, Subaru Forester, Mitsubishi ASX and the recently launched Nissan Juke for example.

WHAT'S UNDER BONNET?

This one gets VW's sophisticated twin-charged engine, the 1.4 with a turbo as well as a supercharger. It produces 118kW of power at 5800 revs and 240Nm of torque from a low 1500 revs. It is paired with a 6-speed DSG transmission, not the  more recent 7-speed .

HOW DOES IT GO?

This is one of our  favourite VW engines, but sadly it will no longer be available going forward. The new seventh generation chassis is not designed to accommodate it. The DSG shift is generally very good, with very quick gear changes but  can become confused in traffic when asked to continually change up and down.

IS IT ECONOMICAL?

Fuel consumption is rated at 7.3 litres/100km. We were getting 8.6 after about 400km, with the trip computer reporting a longterm average of 10.7.

IS IT GREEN?

Gets a four-star rating from the Government's Green Vehicle Guide, producing 170g/km of CO2.

IS IT SAFE?

Gets five stars for safety from ANCAP. It is equipped with a long list of safety features including six airbags, brake assist, traction and stability control.

IS IT COMFORTABLE?

Easy to get in and out of, another advantage of the higher ride height. Interior is roomy with comfortable seats, but the trade off is a small boot.

WHAT'S IT LIKE TO DRIVE?

Inoffensive. It's not going to set your world on fire but it does what it does well enough.

IS IT VALUE FOR MONEY?

Yes and no. Gets daytime running lights, auto hold, cruise control, Bluetooth with music streaming and a multi-function leather steering wheel.

WOULD WE BUY ONE?

Probably not. Not quite sold on the look. If it doesn't have to be a VW the same money buys you plenty of arguably better  options. The Mitsubishi ASX springs to mind.
