Summernats 27 rumbles | mega-gallery

What are the chances of someone screwing together a V8-powered Subaru Kei car ice cream truck, shoving a supercharged V8 into an E46 BMW M3, winding 390kW out of a JB Holden Camira, or rat-rodding a Daihatsu Mira?

All of the above are proof that Summernats 27 was about far more than just SLR Toranas and XY Falcons with mutual hunks of mettle towering from their bonnets.

They were there too, but sprinkled among an automotive smorgasbord that also included a quartet of DMC DeLoreans and a fastidious recreation of the A-Team van from the 1980s TV series.

Hundreds of classic and modified machines completed the rich ‘Nats tapestry, covering genres ranging from street machines, hot and rat rods, kustoms, muscle cars, exotic and modern performance cars, and plenty of blurred lines therein.

A total of 1811 automotive eccentricities decended on Canberra’s Exhibition Park for the 27th running of the Summernats car festival, with their appeal vindicated by 103,437 spectators.

The time-honoured Summernats formula of static displays, driving events and burnout competition were once again spread across the four days, and the event’s top honour – Grand Champion – went to the freshly built 1961 FB Holden of Henry Parry for its outstanding performance across disciplines.
