Nissan confirms IDx and Bladeglider production plans | report

The fanfare surrounding Nissan’s IDx and BladeGlider concepts at last year’s Tokyo motor show was such that the Japanese brand has green-lit plans for production versions, according to Autocar.

Speaking to Nissan product planning boss Andy Palmer at this week’s Detroit motor show, the report suggests that both the 86/BRZ-rivalling IDx and revolutionary BladeGlider electric sports car could reach showrooms within five years.

This latest news follows reports in December that Nissan bosses had admitted "there is already a plan" for a production version of a IDx concept just weeks after their Tokyo debut. The new report suggests the concepts have been added to Nissan’s mid-term production plan, meaning a possible debut before the end of 2018.

Both Nismo and Freelflow versions of the IDx, along with the BladeGlider concept are on show in Detroit this week, underlining their significance to the US market.

Palmer said that a production IDx would be “low cost” and form a budget book end to Nissan’s range of sports cars, while the narrow-front, wide-rear electric BladeGlider would sit above existing offerings. “In the middle we’ll have our traditional sports cars, with a 370Z at the lower end and the GTR at the upper end.”

The next 370Z and GT-R models will beat the IDx and BladeGlider to production, with the new Z set to use a smaller-capacity turbocharged engine, and the next GT-R to use a ‘R-Hybrid’ branded hybrid system.
