Bentley EXP 9F SUV will go on sale

The Bentley EXP 9F SUV on show earlier this year at the Geneva Motor Show 2012.

The outrageous and outrageously expensive SUV has won a go-ahead for the road after an overwhelming response from super-rich buyers.

The production plan is revealed to Carsguide during the Volkswagen Group preview to the Paris motor show, together with news that the concept car shown earlier in 2012 will be significantly revised for customers. It is likely to be less polarising than the Geneva motor show display car, but with the same overall size and proportions. "It will not look the way it does now," a Bentley insider tells me.

But the EXP 9F has been a huge hit, with Bentley's marketing boss Stefan Buescher confirming more than 3000 firm inquiries from potential buyers. Of those, around one third are in Britain. "They are very clear. They tell us they want Buckingham Palace on wheels," he says.

The EXP 9F plan comes on the same night that Bentley confirms it is going racing in 2013, not with a prototype like the car it used to win the Le Mans 24-hour race but with a hotrodded version of its Continental GT. The race-ready prototype of the GT3-class racer is rolled into the spotlight at the VW Group night, sporting a giant rear wing and bodywork that's tweaked for competition.

Bentley boss Wolfgang Schreiber says the GT3 Continental will be competing next year but says further details of the program will have to wait.
