Seller's Comments.

The Peugeot 504 was launched in Australia in June 1970, replacing the earlier 404 and intended to further the strong reputation of the French maker in this country. The 504’s predecessors had built up an almost ‘legendary’ status for their durability, comfort, and extraordinary capability on rough outback roads – starting with the 203, which so famously won the Redex reliability trial in 1953 against the more fancied 6- and 8-cylinder entrants from English and American brands. The 504 was built in Melbourne from CKD (Completely Knocked-Down) kits imported from France, and somewhat ironically the assembly was handled by Renault Australia. Initially launched with a 1.8L engine, this was soon replaced in May 1971 by a 2.0L unit that lifted power from 61 to 69kW – and more importantly, torque from 133 to 160Nm – an appreciable leap of 20%. The car met with critical acclaim immediately, with respected magazine Australian Motor Manual describing it as “one of the finest four-door sedans in the world today”. Aside from the then-unusual standard fitment of four-wheel disc brakes, the 504 delivered a superbly compliant ride and the ability to eat up massive distances with minimal fatigue for the driver and passengers. All this for the comparatively premium price at the time of $4,145 plus on-road costs – an HG Holden Belmont at the same time was $2,640! This 1971 2.0L example (assembled in 1972) is finished in Royal Blue and features a tan and beige interior – the latter reupholstered in recent years, but in keeping with the original materials. It is a 4-speed manual, which makes it more desirable as the locally-built Borg Warner 3-speed automatic option was a full 2 seconds slower to 100km/h and dulled the 504’s appeal as a true driver’s car. This car was delivered new in Adelaide and still bears its original registration number, and presents in almost “time capsule” condition. It will appeal strongly to the Peugeot enthusiast or classic car collector for this reason, and also for the fact it includes a boot-load of spare parts and all its original books and manuals. Unusually there is a fully-functioning mid-1970s under-dash air-conditioning system fitted to the car, but it has been integrated sympathetically with the console design and is the same kind that was offered as a factory option on later 504s assembled here. We are proud to offer this rare piece of French/Australian motor industry history and believe that it will delight both the serious Peugeot collector and classic car connoisseur alike.
