BMW 330ci 2004 Review

BMW has added a six-speed Semi Manual Gearbox (SMG) to a range of its smaller six-cylinder models including the 2.5-litre Sport Compact, 3-Series sedan and coupe and the 3.0-litre 3-Series Coupe and Convertible.

Prices for this tricky transmission range from about $67,000 for the Compact 2.5 through to $116,000 for the 330Ci Convertible.

We took the 330Ci for a spin.

• Comes at a $2400 premium and other provisos regarding vehicle specification.
• Adds a third transmission option to the BMW range, manual, steptronic auto and SMG.
• System can be used as an auto in D mode or through the gearstick sequentially or by steering wheel-mounted paddles.
• Using change paddles, hands never leave steering wheel.
• Multiple shift modes available, also adaptive.
• Similar to SMG in M3 but simpler. Transmission has clutch and gearbox like a regular manual but hydraulic self-shifting mechanism.
• All SMG gear operations are simple to use – foolproof.
• Blips throttle on the down change. Brum, brum.
• Automatically shifts up in sports mode as engine redline is approached.
• Has kick-down fnction and winter mode for starting off in icy conditions.
• Still reckon a manual is quicker (arguably) and offers more control.
• It's possible to find yourself in the wrong gear at the wrong time if you are not paying attention.
• Changes in D mode are not ideal, certainly nowhere near as smooth as true automatic.
• The 330Ci is a great driver's package, with any transmission. We might be oldies but prefer the automatic.
• Engine is one of the best sizes around, bestows superb performance, sound. Relatively frugal, smooth as silk.
• SMG adds a lot to the price, debatable benefits, great for bench rancing at a barbecue and, of course, showing off at the golf club.
