Mercedes-Benz C63 2014 Review

Sadly, the Mercedes-Benz 6.2-litre, naturally aspirated V8 engine, as found only in the C63 AMG variants now, is about to be consigned to automotive history. But not before Benz engineering hoons have had their way with the potent donk in a final fling that sees a special edition 507 (horsepower) variant available in C63AMG wagon, sedan and coupe.

ENGINE / TRANSMISSION

Of course, they went for the doctor in terms of power extracting some 373kW/610Nm from the engine which rates as one of the best sounding units on the road right now. With the extra urge, that sound is amplified to the point of being virtually music to the ears of the mechanically attuned.

They went for bits from the awesome Benz SLS sports car for the 507 engine forged pistons and rods, a special lightweight crank, recalibrated engine computer and other stuff. It still drives the rear wheels through a limited slip diff and seven speedshift sports auto with paddle shift.

PERFORMANCE

It rips from a standstill to 100km/h in a tad over 4.0 seconds, has mid range response to roll back your eyeballs and virtually roars through to engine redline at 7200 revs. The boffins added race start for fun and a four mode drive select Comfort, Sports, Sports plus and Manual, all available from a dial on the centre console. The traction control system also has three modes -- normal, sport and off.

DESIGN / STYLING

Inside is a study in modern technology and classy finishes with a stitched leather dash, two tone leather seats, a sued flat bottom wheel with multi modes and multiple driving position adjustments. We had the coupe which really does justice to the heavy hitting 507 engine.

So do the new dark finish 19-inch alloys over red brake calipers, six piston units at the front. It rides low and looks sleek but offers a surprising level of comfort in the C mode. Flick the dial and everything sharpens up in S, S+ and M.

The interior has plenty of luxury kit including the usual infotainment and connectivity solutions, a large screen, climate control, cruise, electrically adjustable wheel, classy instrumentation with numerous info outputs and even the folding front seats are electrically operated for easy rear seat access.

DRIVING

On the road it's an amazing car with brutal performance if you wish or a soft suppleness akin to a luxury cruiser. Point it at a set of curves and everything gels the big tyres, brakes, low centre of gravity, flat cornering control, stability control and stunning engine to deliver a drive feel matched by few.

Then there's that exhaust note, heightened with a sharp percussion on up changes at full throttle. Bang ... It's addictive and adds another element to car enjoyment. But the amount of fuel going through those eight cylinders can be a tad daunting even though technology keeps it down to a reasonable level. We saw about 11.0 litres/100km in mixed driving. Boot it along and that jumps.

There's room for four inside with a decent rear seat and boot in the coupe. We love the distinctive looks heightened by the louvred bonnet lifted from the C63 Black Edition.
