Ford Fiesta Zetec 2004 Review

It's not as large as the Focus but obviously comes out of the same design house, with its sharp European lines.

Our test vehicle was the sporty, eye-catching Zetec model, priced from $18,990 plus on road costs.

It's a tempting price for a great little car but just remember this does not include automatic transmission $2300.

  • All Fiestas feature the same 1.6-litre Duratec all- alloy engine, featuring double overhead camshafts, 4 valves per cylinder, sequential fuel injection and drive by wire technology.
  • The 1.6-litre twin cam engine develops 74kW of power at 6000rpm and peak torque of 146Nm at 4000rpm.
  • Performance is lively with excellent drive dynamics and plenty of driver feedback to match. We gave the car a good work out on some twisting hairpin turns and it only gave us one nervous moment.
  • The five-speed manual transmission in the Zetec is smooth and easy to use, with a decent set of ratios. It's not a large engine so you have to keep it moving but the good news is that it loves to rev.
  • The throttle is drive-by-wire which adds to the responsiveness of the car.
  • Standard equipment includes remote central locking, power steering, power front windows, power adjustable mirrors, a single slot CD player, dual stage driver and passenger airbags, body colour front and rear bumpers.
  • The Zetec adds airconditioning, steering column- mounted audio controls, front fog lamps, ABS brakes, and 15-inch alloy wheels.
  • Brakes are discs front and drums rear and while the mention of drums might draw a sigh of disappointment, there is nothing disappointing about the way the car pulls up. In a car this small, the front brakes do most of the work anyway.
  • ABS with electronic brakes force distribution that apportions stopping power between the front and the rear is standard.
  • The sporty theme continues inside, but we were a little disappointed at the overuse of hard generic black vinyl trim.
  • We particularly liked the spartan effect of the dash at night, with just the tacho and speedo dominating proceedings.
  • Rear seat access is quick and easy via a large top of the seat latch.
  • No driver footrest.
