The VW California camper van is looking likely to launch locally in 2020, despite the fact the smaller VW Caddy Beach model will not continue next year.
The California model is based upon the mid-sized Transporter van, arguably forming a more workable solution to the “van life” that cashed-up buyers are looking for.
The T6 version of the California has never been sold in Australia, though it is still available in New Zealand, priced from NZD$139,000 (AUD$128,500). CarsGuide understands the target price for an Australian-delivered California would be below that.
Kurt McGuiness, Volkswagen Australia PR and brand experience manager, told CarsGuide that the German brand is looking to add some US-named charm to its Australian line-up when the heavily updated Transporter 6.1 range arrives in mid-2020.
“We still see the California as being a strong opportunity, which is why we’re working hard on introducing it as part of the T6.1 rollout,” said Mr McGuiness.
If the California does make it to Australia it'll compete with the Mercedes-Benz Marco Polo and the Trakka Trakkadu.
