Toyota's new electric SUV! RAV4 Hybrid-sized EV to go "global"

Toyota's going all-electric with a new SUV

Toyota has teased an all-new electric SUV, with the RAV4 hybrid EV to built on a spanking-new architecture and developed in conjunction with Subaru, and is set for launch in 2022.

Toyota has made hay while the hybrid sun shines in Australia, bit while the brand's local arm is yet to comment publicly on the new model, the brand internationally has promised the EV SUV will go "global".

The vehicle - which will also spawn a Lexus twin - will be built in Toyota's new electric factory, dubbed ZEV, or Zero Emissions Vehicles. It will also be the first vehicle built on the brand's e-TNGA platform - an electric-ready version of the lauded TNGA architecture.

The brand is remaining coy on then details, but has promised to transfer its knowledge of hybrid batteries to its EV, with a claim that it will produce more driving range from a smaller battery pack, much like with its Prius PHEV.

The brand is also touting "new battery technology" and a "new type of battery", but it's unlikely to mean solid-state battery technology, which the brand predicts will be ready of a mainstream launch around 2025.

"Toyota will shortly take the next step in the rollout of its forthcoming battery-electric portfolio by first previewing an all-new mid-sized SUV in the coming months," the brans says.

"The versatility and flexibility of e-TNGA technology allows us to design and create vehicles that are not just battery-electric, but also exciting to drive and beautiful to look at."
