Toyota CEO Akio Toyoda shocked the automotive world when it announced at this year’s Japan Mobility Show that will go after Rolls-Royce and Bentley on the global market.
The new Century standalone brand will go global and an Australian launch is being considered.
At this stage no decision has been made on whether a local Century launch will happen.
Lexus Australia CEO John Pappas said many markets are currently considering Century.
“We have no firm plan right now to bring Century into Australia … but we are currently studying whether we believe the Century brand has a place in the Australian market to complement … the Lexus brand.
“If we saw an opportunity where we felt like this would sit within our market in order to complement the Lexus brand and the whole Toyota family, we’d definitely be looking at it.”
If Century does get approved for a local launch, it’s unclear whether these cars will be sold in existing Lexus dealerships, or whether it would justify its own dealer network.
Century currently offers two models – a sedan and an SUV – both are hand-built and are bespoke to the customer’s desires.
At this year’s Japan Mobility Show it revealed the new Century Coupe concept, which is essentially a high-riding coupe that’s designed to be the ultimate vehicle to be chauffeured around in.
It’s unclear whether the Century Coupe will actually be produced.
The company also showed an updated version of the Century GRMN sedan with a new grille and Nishiji carbon fibre, among other features.
Additionally, the company showed a Century SUV with a black matte paint exterior finish and an orange interior. It was intended to show the bespoke options that can be created.
