This new car will change everything you thought about Toyota.

The world’s biggest carmaker is about to take the covers off its most potent machine to date and the spiritual successor to the vaunted Lexus LFA.

Toyota’s new performance monster will be revealed in full on Friday December 5, but the Japanese giant has given us a sneak peek via a new teaser video.

Read More About Toyota

The teaser shows the new Ferrari-hunting supercar overtaking the Toyota 2000GT (1967) and Lexus LFA (2011), as it hints the new car will take up the mantle left by those two icons.

There isn’t much detail to talk about except the unmistakable sound of a V8 engine as it rumbles around a race track.

Another nugget revealed is the car will be called the GR GT.

It was originally thought to fall under the Lexus brand and be called the LFR.

It’s not known whether this will spawn a new GR sub brand from Toyota, or if it will just sit separate from all other marques in the brand’s stable to help it stand out as a halo car.

Spy shots of the vehicle have been circling online for some time, and a prototype version even rocketed up the famed hill climb at the Goodwood Festival of Speed earlier this year.

Reports suggest the GR GT will be powered by a hybrid 4.0-litre, twin-turbo V8 engine driving the rear wheels, with the engine alone expected to produce 530kW and total output rising to about 660kW.

Hybrid power is the future of high-end supercars with all the big name players adding plug-in hybrid power to their latest machines. Lamborghini and Ferrari are generating monstrous outputs from their new petrol-electric rides.

Toyota's road rocket was previewed by the earlier Lexus Sport Concept, with its low profile, long bonnet and massive air intakes showing its performance panache.
