Chery’s luxury sub-brand Jaecoo has revealed a new small SUV to slot in below its mid- and full-sized SUVs coming to Australia.
Set to join the already-confirmed Jaecoo J7 mid-size SUV and later-to-come J8 large SUV, the Jaeco J5 small SUV has been confirmed for Australia shortly after its global reveal.
Coming into Australia branded separately to existing Chery models like Omoda 5 and Tiggo 7, the J7 will be the first Jaecoo to arrive, with a plug-in hybrid version. The J8 should arrive halfway through 2025.
While a Chery spokesperson confirmed to CarsGuide the Jaecoo J5 is coming, specifications and timing aren’t yet known.
In other markets where the J5 will be available sooner, details like its engine options and dimensions have been published.
For example, in Russia the J5 will be offered as a FWD powered by a 1.5-litre turbo four-cylinder engine and continuously variable transmission (CVT) or a 1.6-litre turbo engine with dual-clutch (DCT) and all-wheel drive. Expect the latter here, as with the J7, until the PHEV becomes an option.
The J5 is 4380mm long, 1860mm wide and 1650mm tall, with a 2610mm wheelbase, so roughly the same size as a Hyundai Kona.
Outside, there are some rear styling elements reminiscent of a Range Rover Evoque, while the front is dominated by a large grille with vertical chrome elements.
Inside, a portrait-style 13.2-inch multimedia screen is central to the front row, while above is a large panoramic sunroof.
With its premium slant, Jaecoo is keen for you to imagine it as an Audi Q3 or BMW X1 rival. We'll reserve judgement until we've seen one in the flesh.
Specifications and arrival timing for the Jaecoo J5 will be confirmed as the brand ramps up its local presence.
