Revolutionary change sweeping the electric car market: Volvo is the latest car brand to target Tesla with 'mega casting' manufacturing process for its Tesla Model Y and BMW iX3 rivalling EX60 - report
The EX60 is effectively the electric version of the popular and critically acclaimed XC60 SUV.
Name and size are likely to be the only similarities with the XC60, with it being underpinned with the new SPA3 scalable electric car platform. This EV platform is an evolution of the architecture that forms the base of the larger EX90.
Volvo claims it will have enhanced computing power that will deliver higher performance and improved features.
It will also be more scalable than before, capable of making vehicles smaller than the mini EX30 and larger than the seven-seat EX90.
Volvo’s Chief Engineering and Technology Officer, Anders Bell, called the SPA3 platform a game-changer when it was announced late last year.
“It allows all of our engineering effort to be channeled into one single direction that powers all our products, instead of working on specific car projects,” he said.
Volvo is also following Tesla’s lead with its new EX60 and will build it with a technique it dubs, mega casting, according to previous reports.
The radical procedure die-casts large sections of the car such as the complex rear and front underbody in one piece.
This apparently rolls hundreds of individual parts into one solid slab, which slashes production costs and increases efficiency that should make future vehicles cheaper.
Tesla is currently the only car maker that uses this process, which allows it to sell its cars for less than competitors.
This manufacturing process, combined with the cost saving associated with the hugely scalable platforms, means the EX60 might be able to undercut premium rivals such as the BMW iX3, Porsche Macan Electric, Audi Q6 e-tron and coming Mercedes-Benz EQC.
With a European launch locked in for early 2026, it is likely an Australian launch will follow towards the end of the year or early in 2027.
