Family cars don’t need to be boring.

Cupra has confirmed the return of the limited-run Formentor VZ5, which is locked in to land in Australia in 2026.

The Formentor VZ5 was only built in left-hand drive last time, but Cupra will now produce the feisty family-hauler with the heart of an Audi RS3 in right-hand drive.

You’ll need to be quick as Cupra is only offering 4000 examples globally.

Under the bonnet is a 2.5-litre turbocharged five-cylinder petrol engine pumps out a substantial 287kW and 480Nm, which is 7kW and 20Nm less than the RS3.

This is paired to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and all-wheel drive.

It also is fitted with torque-splitting tech that distributes torque to the rear wheels to enhance cornering ability and improve stability.

The VZ5 builds on the edgy styling of the standard Formentor and adds a new front bumper, front splitter with an engraved VZ5 logo, fatter wheel arches and a new rear bumper and diffuser.

It wears 20-inch alloy wheels in copper colour and will be available in a variety of colours including Midnight Black, Dark Void, Magnetic Tech Matt, Century Bronze Matt and Enceladus Grey Matt.

Inside the VZ5 has added sports bucket seats with improved side bolstering, ambient lighting and Cupra details throughout.

There is no word on price yet, but expect it to arrive with a serious premium over the current Formentor VZx which starts at $65,790 before on-road costs.
