Porsche 918 Spyder official images homage to 917

The prototype camouflage – although it could scarcely be credited with disguising the Porsche 918 Spyder – pays homage to the legendary 917 racing scheme.

The open two-seat supercar is heading for the production line in September 2013, with the first buyers taking delivery within three month later. The 1700kg 918 Spyder is an engineering showcase carrying an arsenal of new Porsche technology under – and including – its ultra-lightweight carbon-fibre reinforced plastic body.

The wizardry starts with the parallel hybrid system that sees a 425kW 4.6-litre V8 driving the rear wheels in tandem with a 90kW electric motor while another 80kW electric motor drives the front wheels. Combined torque is 750Nm and with the electric motors tipping in from the startline, the car gets to in just 2.8 seconds. In electric-only mode, drawing on a lithium-ion battery pack, the 918 Spyder gets a 25km range with a top speed of 150km/h.

After that, the engine kicks in with five different modes from battery recharge through to all-out performance driving. The recapture mode gets three times more efficiency than conventional ones by using ceramic brakes, helping keep the fuel economy down to a claimed 3.0-litres/100km with emissions just 70g/km. Also on board are adaptive suspension, rear axle steering and aerodynamics, which along with the hybrid and body structure technology, are seeding future Porsche engineering.
