Victoria Police will also be out in force to crack down on motorists who speed in 40km/h zones around schools.

A blitz on parents who fail to safely restrain their children in their cars will be launched by Victorian police next week.

Victoria Police will also be out in force to crack down on motorists who speed in 40km/h zones around schools. The operation, which has been timed to coincide with the Shine a Light on Road Safety campaign, will focus on Melbourne CBD, Casey, Dandenong, Yarra Ranges, Monash and Wangaratta.

Assistant Commissioner Bob Hill said police caught 2000 drivers last year for failing to restrain their children properly and that number was "unacceptable".

"Next week, Victoria Police will be conducting an operation focusing on children and road safety," Mr Hill said. "Operation Kids Safe will involve police being deployed to specific high-risk areas across the state in significant numbers."

Distraction offences and seatbelt compliance for children will also be an area of focus

"We'll be looking at 40km/h zones, parking around schools and sporting precincts both before and after school and at the weekend. Distraction offences and seatbelt compliance for children will also be an area of focus.

"The number of fatal and serious injury collisions is just not acceptable and as a community, I know we can do more to reduce road trauma in this state." The road toll for this year stands at 93 - eight more than this time last year. The Shine a Light campaign, which will be launched tomorrow by Road Trauma Support Services, aims to stop deaths and injuries on our roads.
