Nissan Terra 2019 under consideration for Australia

The ladder-frame Nissan Terra large SUV shares its underpinnings with the Navara pick-up.

Nissan Australia is strongly considering importing the Terra large SUV to the local market, with it working on making the business case stack up.

The Terra is based on the ladder-frame Navara ute, and it was revealed internationally in February.

Nissan's local arm has said it would like to take on the vehicle, but it first needs to justify the business case with global headquarters.

According to Nissan Australia managing director Stephen Lester, there is "no question" it would take the vehicle if it were made available for Australia.

"The question fundamentally always is, has the global team aligned or have we sufficiently answered the demands of the business case in terms of that decision, and this is something that we still have in the works with the global team," he said.

"For sure we will continue to investigate the opportunity with Terra."

Mr Lester explained that there are many things to be considered before pulling the trigger on an Aussie Terra launch.

"It involves a whole lot of things, from things like the homologation requirements for the vehicle, what the future plans would be, the life cycle of the whole vehicle planning for sure from a volume standpoint, but from also things like an incentive and advertising dollar standpoint, and all those things will roll up into various scorecards and we’ll look at what that business plan looks like for the vehicle to make sure that it’s viable to bring to market."

If the Terra was to come to Australia, it would likely be sourced from Nissan's Thailand factory, however Mexico, Spain and Argentina are other possibilities.

It would also likely use the same 2.3-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine featured in the Navara pick-up, which is available in two states of tune including 120kW/403Nm with a single turbocharger or 140kW/450Nm with a twin-turbo set-up.

Customers could also expect a part-time four-wheel-drive driveline with a low-range transfer case, a rear differential lock and multi-link coil-sprung rear suspension.
