The Nissan 400Z has begun to take shape, with Japanese design artists turning the tips we've received to date into a finished and retro-themed product that could preview what the Japanese brand's next sports car will look like.

If it feels like you've been waiting a while for the new Nissan 'Z' car, it's because you have, but there is at last movement at the station, with the brand in Australia trademarking the 'Z' name here in preparation for its arrival.

The trademark claim was submitted in March this year, suggesting Nissan is readying to launch the new performance car Down Under.

International reporting suggests the new 400Z will be a 300kW, rear-drive monster, with media claiming the new model will be revealed in within the next 12 months.

Those reports have the 400Z to receive the twin-turbocharged V6 engine from Infiniti Q60 Red Sport, producing around 400hp, or 298kW, and 475Nm.

The Infiniti can clip 100km/h in 5.0sec flat, but the lighter, more aggressive 400Z should be even quicker again.

That news follows reports that a significantly updated 370Z will be first to arrive, with the the same 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6 engine acting as a hell of a send off for the ageing icon.
