We know the Smart brand is returning to the local new car market with a pure-EV line-up headlined by the Smart #1 compact SUV and #3 compact coupe-style SUV (pronounced 'hashtag one' and 'hashtag three') set to arrive in September.
And now the joint-venture operation, established by Mercedes-Benz and Geely in China, has confirmed domestic market launch timing for the next hashtag in its production pipeline.
Previewed by a rugged concept study unveiled at the Beijing Motor Show in April, as reported in CarNewsChina the production Smart #5 is now set to go on sale in China on August 28.

The Smart #5 is a step up in size from its city-sized siblings, measuring a fraction over 4.7m long, just over 1.9m wide and 1.7m tall with a 2900mm wheelbase. This gives the five-door, five-seater a similar footprint to popular mid-sizers like the Hyundai Tucson and Toyota RAV4.
Previous homologation filings with China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) confirm four #5 powertrain variants.
Single-motor FWD and dual-motor AWD versions will be offered, the former in two output grades (250kW and 267kW) with the base dual-motor producing a combined 432kW and the flagship Brabus increasing that number to 475kW (637hp!). Top speed is limited to 200 km/h, with the Brabus nudging up to 210 km/h.
Two battery pack options — 76kWh (lithium iron phosphate) and 100kWh (nickel manganese cobalt) — will be available in China with (CLTC) range claims varying by battery and motor configuration from a minimum of 570km to as much as 740km. The car’s 800V architecture means fast charging capacity will be high.
Dual-motor AWD #5s will also retain all-terrain driving modes across ‘Off-road’, ‘Sand’, ‘Snow’, ‘Mud’ and ‘Rock’.
The Smart #5’s squarer, more upright stance differs from the #1 and #3 with polygonal head- and tail-lights and silver bumper inserts also prominent.
Rim size varies by model grade from 18 to 21 inches in diameter with ‘hidden’ door handles another distinguishing feature. Kerb weight ranges from 1800kg to 2450kg.
When contacted for comment a local Smart spokesperson told CarsGuide the Australian distribution operation is “wholly focussed on the #1 and #3 launch” adding “we are anticipating further #5 activity/announcements within the month from a global perspective”.
“If a RHD [right-hand-drive] version that meets our local requirements for price and spec and availability (becomes available), it would be given due consideration,” he said.
Smart has set up its own operations in Australia and will sell the vehicles through LSH Auto Australia, a network of dealers in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane that currently distribute Mercedes-Benz products.
