The next-generation Hyundai Tucson mid-size SUV will be available with a performance-focused engine, but according to a fresh report, it might be limited to the returning N-Line grade instead of also being used in a new, more powerful N flagship.
Citing the Tucson’s recently published emissions and noise certification from South Korea’s Ministry of Environment, Korean Car Blog has suggested an N version might not be on the way after all, as it was not mentioned in the government documentation.
As reported, the N and N-Line were expected to use the same 2.5-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder engine, albeit in two states of tune, with both matched to an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission (DCT).
The N was expected to produce at least 254kW of power, while the N-Line has now been reconfirmed by Korean Car Blog to develop 213kW as well as 422Nm of torque.
Meanwhile, the emissions and noise certification has verified a new 132kW/265Nm 1.6-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder engine, a hybrid version of which adds an electric motor to boost peak power to 169kW. This unit will be paired with a seven-speed DCT.
While not mentioned in the government documentation, Korean Car Blog has reiterated an upgraded 2.0-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine will also be available, although its outputs and transmission are yet to be released.
With the Tucson set to be revealed this month, it won’t be long before we find officially find out what’s in store, but don’t expect any solid news on the N anytime soon, as if it does come to fruition, it likely won’t be released until later into its life cycle.
Either way, Hyundai recently confirmed the new Volkswagen Tiguan rival will start its Australian rollout in the first half of next year, likely headlined by mainstream variants.
For reference, the Tucson will be based on the Vision T concept from last November’s Los Angeles motor show, meaning it will move to a new platform and therefore grow in size.
