New Audi S7 Sportback 2020 pricing and specs detailed: Mercedes-Benz CLS-rivalling large car swaps V8 for a V6

Swapping the V8 engine for a V6 has not cost the new Audi S7 any straight-line performance.

Audi’s new-generation S7 Sportback has landed in Australian showrooms, priced from $159,500 before on-road costs that is around $20,000 cheaper than its predecessor.

The new S7 ditches the 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 from before for a 2.9-litre twin-turbo V6. Power in the new car however, matches its predecessor at 331kW, while torque is up 50Nm to 600Nm.

With drive sent to all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission, the S7 can accelerate from zero to 100km/h in 4.6 seconds – matching its predecessor.

While the S7 shares the same engine found in the RS5 Coupe, RS5 Sportback and RS4 Avant, Audi has added an electric powered compressor underpinned by a 48-volt mild-hybrid system to reduce turbo lag.

Standard equipment on the S7 Sportback includes torque vectoring, adaptive air suspension, 21-inch Audi Sport wheels, black exterior highlights, more aggressive bodywork, soft-close doors, privacy glass, red brake callipers, keyless entry, push-button start, electric tailgate with gesture control, panoramic sunroof and Matrix LED headlights.

Inside, the S7 is kitted out with sports seats front and rear wrapped in Valcona leather, heated front seats, brushed aluminium trim, four-zone climate control, LED ambient lighting, sports steering wheel with paddle shifters, and black-cloth headliner.

Like the new-generation A7 range, the S7 Sportback features a dual-screen multimedia system, with a 10.1- and 8.6-inch display top and bottom respectively, both featuring haptic feedback.

Features include satellite navigation, digital radio, wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto connectivity and wireless smartphone charger.

Audi’s all-digital Virtual Cockpit instrumentation also features, which is displayed across a 12.3-inch screen.

Safety systems include adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, autonomous emergency braking, surround-view monitor, front and rear parking sensors, driver attention alert, rear cross-traffic alert and an exit warning system.

A Dynamic Package is available to S7 buyers for $7700, which adds a sport differential, dynamic steering and rear-axle steering, while ceramic brakes cost $18,000, laser headlights add $2500 and a premium 19-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system adds $11,700 to the bottom line.
