After years of rumours, Toyota has finally confirmed and revealed the mini FJ LandCruiser.
Last week Japanese media reported the brand would reveal the pocket-sized 4WD today, and it appears they were on the money.
The boxy FJ looks just like patent images revealed earlier this year with chunky wheel arches and cladding along the sides, as well as monster bumpers and roof racks.
Block Toyota lettering on the front and C-shaped LED headlights add some retro charm.
The FJ is bigger than first thought, with the prototype measuring 4575mm long, 1855mm wide, 1960mm tall and has a wheelbase of 2580mm.
That length puts it closer to a RAV4 than a Corolla Cross as first thought.
Power comes from a 2.7-litre petrol engine that makes 120kW and 246Nm. This is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission and part-time four-wheel drive.
The FJ LandCruiser rides on the IMV platform, which underpins vehicles such as the HiLux Champ in South East Asia.
Toyota said the FJ will have excellent off-road ability worthy of the LandCruiser name. It will even have wheel articulation (the ability of a tire to stay on the ground) equivalent to the 70 Series.
Its small wheelbase - the distance between the front and rear axles - allows for maximum manoeuvrability off-road. This is paired with underbody protection and a more rigid body the company said boosts handling.
Toyota claims the FJ was put through extensive off-road testing.
Inside it has a big central multimedia screen and a digital driver display. Toyota said there will be plenty of safety tech, which will be needed if it is to be sold in markets such as Australia.
The mini FJ is expected to launch in Japan in 2026, which bodes well for an Australian launch soon after.
Toyota Australia has also trademarked the FJ LandCruiser name here, which adds more weight to the claim the car will arrive here sooner rather than later.
Toyota Australia was noncommittal when asked about the FJ's chances for Down under.
"Toyota Australia continuously explores opportunities to evolve our vehicle line up, however we have no current plans to introduce the Land Cruiser FJ to our market," a statement read.
It will make its public debut at the coming 2025 Japan Mobility Show (JMS) later this month.
