The former Audi chief executive arrested as part of a broader investigation into diesel-emissions cheating has had his appeal for release denied by a German court.
Rupert Stadler was arrested in June after German authorities claimed he posed a risk to their investigation, with fears he could suppress or alter evidence, or coerce witnesses. Almost two months later, the former high-flying executive remains in custody, with his appeal for release denied this week.
"The Chamber emphasises that danger of obstructing justice remains. The release of the accused from custody was therefore rejected,” the Munich Court of Appeal said in a statement.
Stadler "temporarily" stood down from his role with the car company in June, and with the German investigation continuing, his spell in custody shows no immediate sign of ending.
Audi has recalled more than 900,000 vehicles globally that were fitted with software designed to "cheat" emissions tests, part of a broader VW Group recall that has impacted millions of vehicles around the world.
