XPeng has updated its X9 electric people mover in China as it edges closer to an Australian launch.
The upgrades include better performance and improved range, according to Car News China.
The new X9 will continue to come in single- and dual-motor variants, both receiving power increases.Â
The single electric motor variant now produces 235kW and 450Nm from its front motor, while the up-spec version adds a rear motor producing an extra 135kW/190Nm. Total system output for the latter is 370kW.
Both variants get an larger 110kWh ternary lithium battery, which offers an increased range of 710km or 750km, depending on the specification, according to lenient CLTC testing.
For context, the pre-update version came with either 98.4kWh or 105kWh battery packs, depending on the variant, which offered between 650km and 740km of CLTC range.
It's worth noting this update was purely for the electric versions of the X9. The range-extender (REEV) versions haven't changed.
There have been limited physical exterior changes to the X9, but new front and rear bumpers align it with the REEV versions. As a result it is now 23mm longer than the pre-update electric X9.Â
Under the skin the X9 has undergone a serious tech upgrade, with substantial AI capabilities.
It gets three AI computer chips from XPeng’s in-house branch Turing, which will be used to power advanced driving assistance functions and the intelligent cockpit system.Â
XPeng currently sells one model in Australia, with its Tesla Model Y-rivalling G6 all-electric SUV launching earlier this year, starting from $54,800 before on-road costs.Â
The X9 people mover is expected to launch in the middle of 2026, with customer deliveries to commence in the second quarter of next year.Â
At this stage, Australia will only get the electric version of the X9, with the REEV variant in China unlikely to make its way down under.Â
As an all-electric people mover, it will take on its fellow Chinese rivals such as Zeekr’s 009 and the LDV Mifa9, along with Volkswagen’s ID.Buzz.
Additionally XPeng will launch an updated version of the G6 in the first quarter of 2026, then the larger G9 electric SUV will launch later in the year.Â
