Here comes Hyundai's ute? New EV "light-commercial vehicle" announced alongside Kia's new pick-up!

Here comes Hyundai's ute! New EV light-commercial vehicle announced alongside Kia's new ute.

Hyundai now appears odds-on to launch an electric ute that will sit alongside Kia's new EV dual-cab, with the brand confirming an all-electric "light commercial vehicle" the day before its sister brand confirmed its own pick-up plans.

While Hyundai is yet to confirm exactly what the light commercial vehicle will be, Kia has said in the past that its new ute would be shared with Hyundai, and the timing appears impeccable.

The new model forms part of Hyundai's broader plan to launch 17 new BEV vehicles between now and 2030 – 11 wearing the Hyundai badge, and six badged as Genesis – in its push to increase its EV sales to 1.87 million by 2030.

“Hyundai is successfully accelerating its transition to electrification and becoming a global leader in EVs despite a challenging business environment caused by the global chip shortage and ongoing pandemic,” says Hyundai President and CEO, Jaehoon Chang.

The new model will be built on Hyundai's Integrated Modular Architecture (IMA), which can be used for both passenger vehicles, but also adapted to a purpose-built-vehicle platform (PBV) for light commercial vehicles.

The standard chassis system allows all models to share batteries and motors, reducing cost and, the brand says, improving driving range.
