Chevrolet's most advanced Corvette ever has arrived — and it’s a hybrid.
Priced at $275,000 (before on-road costs), the Chevrolet E-ray is an electrified, all-wheel drive performance vehicle, though don’t let the addition of hybrid power fool you into thinking it loses any performance. It's quite the opposite.
With a 6.2-litre V8 engine paired with a 119kW front-axle electric motor, the E-ray delivers a stunning output of 488kW matched with 806Nm. That’s more power than a Porsche 911 Turbo.
Better yet, it rockets from 0-60mph (0-97km/h) in 2.5 seconds, matching the original Bugatti Veyron.
Helping to deliver those outputs is Chevrolet’s eight-speed-dual-clutch transmission, which carries both automatic or driver-focused manual mode, while the all-wheel drive platform promises firm traction to the road.
Further boosting the E-ray’s performance credentials is the inclusion of carbon-ceramic brakes. The “track-ready” ZER pack also comes standard on E-Ray models to Australia and NZ, which adds high-performance Michelin Pilot Sport 4S Tyres, ZER Performance Suspension with Magnetic Ride Control and a taller spoiler wicker for track use.
A 1.9kWh lithium-ion battery electrifies the Corvette for the first time, powering the E-ray’s electric front axle motor through energy that is self-replenished from coasting and braking.
Like the Stingray, the E-ray comes equipped with drive modes to suit a range of different conditions. These include Tour, Track, Weather, MyMode and Z-Mode.
There’s also the added option of stealth mode, which allows drivers to use electric-only power for four to six kilometres at a maximum speed of 72km/h. It allows for near silent start-ups and take-offs in urban streets which your neighbours will appreciate.
Design-wise, the E-ray looks much the same as the rest of the Corvette family with its wide-bodied proportions and agile, low-to-the-ground stance.
The vehicle’s rear design is distinguished by a large window that looks directly into the vehicle's cockpit. Integrated as a single component, the window can be lifted from the rear spoiler to reveal the car’s mid-mounted V8 engine, along with rear boot space. There’s also double twin exhausts.
Inside, the cockpit is very much moulded to the driver. The centre console acts like a divider between driver and passenger, boasting an 8.0-inch, driver-centric touchscreen with engine performance and multimedia functions. There’s also a larger, 12.0-inch configurable digital driver’s display.
As standard, the E-ray gets staggered 20-inch front and 21-inch rear alloy wheels, a carbon fibre and leather-detailed heated steering wheel, Bose 14-speaker Performance Audio Speakers, dual-zone climate, wireless charging, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and eight-way powered driver and passenger seats that are heated and ventilated.
There's a host of safety features, too. These include automatic front pedestrian braking, forward collision alert, as well as lane keep assist with lane departure warning.
It comes available in 14 exterior colours, with seven interior colour schemes and two seating options.
“This is the best of Corvette today, paired with the brand’s exciting, electrified tomorrow and it’s the kind of performance vehicle that needs to be driven to be believed. And that day is coming, and coming fast, for the people of Australia and New Zealand,” says Jess Bala, General Motors Managing Director for Australia and New Zealand.
The Chevrolet E-Ray will be available to order from GMSV dealers across Australia and New Zealand from this month.
