KGM will kick off the compact ute segment in Australia after confirming plans to launch its upcoming electric ute locally.

Dubbed the Musso EV, the electric model isn’t to be confused with the turbo-diesel Musso, which it only shares its name with. The car-based ute is expected to be built on the same monocoque chassis as the mid-sized electric Torres EVX SUV.

As such, it will likely be considerably smaller in size to the diesel-powered utes we know and love in Australia as capable work vehicles, such as the Ford Ranger, Toyota HiLux and Isuzu D-Max.

Unlike those models, the Musso EV plans to posture itself almost entirely as a lifestyle-focused EV pickup that “satisfies both customers’ daily lives and leisure and is optimised for modern lifestyle”, according to the brand.

Think of it as a rival to compact pickups sold in the US such as the Ford Maverick and Hyundai Santa Cruz, the latter has been rumoured to arrive in Australia at some point after a second-generation refresh.

Leaked images provided by AutoSpy, taken ahead of the car’s official launch at the Seoul Mobility Show, picture it as a softened version of the original concept revealed back in 2023, which appeared almost identical to the Torres EVX, albeit with a small tub at the rear and more utilitarian styling.

That means it will arrive with a slightly alternative front grille, smaller wheels and no roof-mounted LED lights. The rest of its design features do appear to have made it to production spec, though.

For now its underpinnings are uncertain, but if the EVX is anything to go by, we can expect a 73.4kWh lithium-iron-phosphate battery (LFP) sourced from BYD that delivers up to 462km of WLTP-rated range on the UK-spec model.

The Torres EVX is only offered in single-motor, front-wheel drive configurations in the UK that deliver up to 152kW/339Nm, although a dual-motor all-wheel drive grade is likely for the Musso EV.

No local timeline for the Musso EV has been given in Australia, though it could land here in a matter of months following confirmation by the brand of a Q1 release in South Korea.

Expect more details throughout the first half of 2025.
