Tesla looks set to soon introduce a new, stretched version of the top-selling Model Y electric SUV in Australia with three rows of seating.

The 2026 Tesla Model Y L has now been approved for sale in Australia, as per an Australian Government listing. Vehicles typically appear on this portal a few months before they officially go on sale.

We’ve reached out to Tesla Australia to see if or when the Model Y L is actually launching locally and we’ll update this story once we hear back.

"Model Y L is a China specific product for now, we will continue to assess new products for our market as they become available," said a Tesla spokesperson back in August 2025.

Although there are three-row versions of the Model Y available in other markets, if the Model Y L launches in Australia, it’ll be the first time a three-row example is available in Australia.

It will also be the first three-row Tesla SUV offered in Australia since the Model X was axed locally in 2020.

The Tesla Model Y L has a six-seat configuration with second-row captain’s chairs that have electrically folding armrests.

According to the approval filing, the Model Y L measures in at 4969mm long, 1920mm wide and 1668mm tall with a 3040mm wheelbase. This makes it 177mm longer overall thanks primarily to a 150mm longer wheelbase, as well as 44mm taller.

Compared to the standard Model Y, the Model Y L has longer rear doors, a lengthened rear three-quarter panel, as well as a higher roof line.

The approval filing notes the Model Y L is powered by a dual electric motor set-up with a total system output of 378kW. This is the same set-up as the existing Long Range AWD.

19-inch wheels are standard, with the front tyres measuring in at 255/45 and the rear tyres measuring in at 275/45.

In China the Model Y L receives air vents mounted on the pillars for the second- and third-row, an 18-speaker sound system, 16.0-inch touchscreen multimedia system and a 8.0-inch rear touchscreen.

The Model Y L is currently only produced in China, making it a likely candidate for an Australian launch as all the Model Y variants, except the German-sourced Performance, are made there.
