Ford Mach 1 2020: First glimpse of Mustang-based crossover

Ford's Mustang-based crossover has been designed with performance in mind

Like the Mustang but wish it was just a little bigger? Ford is working on the solution for you, and the US giant has just given us our very first glimpse of it.

Tentatively titled the Mach 1 (though Ford is thought to be reconsidering the name), the Mustang-based crossover is destined for launch in 2020. It will be a fully electric, performance-focused C-segment "utility vehicle", or SUV, that Ford has hinted will offer a 480km (at least) range.

This is the very car that Ford announced via a delightfully 1980s-style teaser video back in January.

Details beyond those are very thin on the ground, other than the Mustang inspiration might extend only as far as the styling, with the Mach 1 though to be front-wheel drive and riding on the new Focus platform. Given Ford is pitching it as a truly global product, an Australian launch is most definitely on the cards.

And we know it is being developed by Ford's team Edison global product development director, Darren Palmer, who most recently worked on launching the latest Mustang.

"Electric vehicle customers are buying into the future and our team is 100 per cent focused on not only delivering vehicles they will love, but providing an entire electric vehicle ecosystem that works flawlessly," Palmer says.

"It’s exciting to know that my stint leading development of the next-generation Mustang actually comes full circle as we get ready to launch our electric Mustang-inspired utility. I, for one, can’t wait to have one ."
