Ford Lincoln Navigator concept unveiled at 2016 New York motor show

There is no limit to our love for SUVs, apparently, as Ford unveils a super-luxury seven-seater.

Is this the world's most luxurious SUV?

Ford has unveiled a new model with its own staircase, Lamborghini-style "gullwing" doors, and a built-in wardrobe cabinet in the cargo area.

The new Ford Lincoln Navigator also has four large high resolution video screens that double as tablet computers, and a sunroof that stretches the entire length of the vehicle.

Ford boldly calls it "your personal sanctuary", to take the grief out of the daily grind.

The super luxury SUV is a pointer to a new edition of the Ford Lincoln Navigator

There is just one catch: it's only motor show tease for now.

Unveiled at the New York auto show overnight, the super luxury SUV is a pointer to a new edition of the Ford Lincoln Navigator.

And the showroom version won't have a staircase, Lamborghini-style "gullwing" doors or a built-in wardrobe cabinet in the cargo hold.

It will, though, have new levels of opulence, leather and a giant sunroof.

As a US-only model it's not due in Australia anytime soon, but it is a sign of just how crazy global demand for SUVs has become.

Earlier this month British brand Bentley unveiled its first ever off-roader, the Bentayga, which at $450,000 is the world's most expensive SUV -- with the world's most expensive car accessory, a $300,000 clock in the dashboard.

However, as with most of these 'faux-wheel-drives' it is unlikely to get very far off the beaten track.

Powered by a twin turbo 6.0-litre W12 engine, it can blast from 0 to 100kmh in a supercar quick 4.1 seconds and has a top speed of 301km/h, making it faster than a Porsche Cayenne Turbo SUV – even though it weighs an epic 2.5 tonnes.

Meanwhile, even Lamborghini is poised to eventually introduce an SUV; the Lamborghini Urus is due in showrooms in 2018.

Arguably the most luxurious brand in the world, Rolls-Royce, is also getting in on the action, with an SUV due in showrooms by 2020.

In Australia, SUV sales are poised to overtake passenger cars.

In the first two months of this year, Australians bought 70,000 SUVs (up 17 per cent compared with the same period last year) versus 75,000 passenger cars (down 7 per cent), according to figures from the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries.

If sales continue at their current rate, SUVs could overtake passenger cars in Australia by the end of this year.
