Ford GT Carbon Series 2019: harder, faster, stronger for American supercar

Ford has unveiled an even lighter and faster version of its very light and very fast GT supercar, confirming the 2019 Carbon Series today.

Billed as a bonafide race car you can drive home in, the Carbon Series is 18kg lighter than the regular GT, owing mostly to new carbon-fibre wheels, a titanium exhaust and wheel nuts, and a new polycarbonate engine cover and rear hatch.

It might be the most hardcore road version of Ford's GT (the Competition Series was all about stripped-back track work), but it's not without its small luxuries. Air-conditioning still appears, for example, as does a stereo. But you can kiss goodbye anything Ford considered superfluous, including cupholders or cabin storage bins.

“The Ford GT Carbon Series will stand out on the road with its striking, carbon-fibre-rich design and on the track with its athleticism,” says Ford Performance director, Hermann Salenbauch. “It is yet another example of how we can bring to life our Le Mans-winning supercar in new and exciting ways so our customer can share in that magical legacy.”

Happily, the engine hasn't changed, with the Ford GT Carbon Series still motivated by the brand's 3.5-litre V6 which, with the help of twin turbocharging, spits out a massive 647 horsepower (482kW), sending it thundering to the rear tyres via a seven speed dual-clutch automatic.

The Ford GT is already basically sold out, with the brand only committing to initially building 500, but after receiving more than 7000 applications, it relented and built 500 more.

But there is a glimmer of hope. This year the brand confirmed it would build a final run of 350 cars, with applications for the US$500,000 supercar opening November 8. And, at a buyer's request, any one of those could be the Carbon Series.
