The compact van battle is heating up with Renault delivering more affordable petrol versions of its Kangoo.
The fully electric Kangoo E-Tech has been available to order for a little while, but this marks the first internal combustion variants offered for the long-delayed third-generation model.
Renault’s smallest van has been on sale in Europe for nearly four years now, but it’s only just now being offered Down Under.
The new Kangoo petrol undercuts its two key rivals - the Peugeot Partner and the Volkswagen Caddy - when it comes to the opening price.
Pricing for the Kangoo kicks off with the short-wheelbase (SWB) petrol 1.3 manual at $38,990 before on-road costs. Adding an automatic transmission - or Efficient Dual Clutch (EDC) in Renault speak - ups the price to $41,990.
A long-wheelbase (LWB) petrol auto tops the non-EV range at $43,990.
The recently introduced facelifted version of the Peugeot Partner now starts from $39,990 for the SWB auto. Like for like, it’s $2000 cheaper than its French rival.
VW’s Caddy starts from $40,990 for the SWB manual, with the auto upping that to $43,990 before on-road costs.
Powering the Renault is a 1.3-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine offering up 96kW of power and 240Nm of torque, ensuring a combined cycle fuel use figure of 6.4 litres per 100 kilometres for the six-speed manual, and 6.2L/100km for the seven-speed auto.
The Kangoo has a load volume of 4.2 square metres, payload of up to 756kg and a 1500kg towing capacity.
All Kangoos come with an 8.0-inch multimedia screen with wireless smartphone integration, a 4.2-inch TFT driver information display, reversing camera and rear parking sensors.
It also comes standard with a six-way adjustable driver’s seat and four-way adjustable passenger seat, auto headlights and wipers, power windows, heated and electrically adjustable door mirrors, auto stop-start and manual air conditioning. There’s also a full-size spare wheel.
Safety-wise the little Renault delivery van comes with auto emergency braking with pedestrian, cyclist and junction detection, a lane departure warning, cruise control with a speed limiter and hill start assist.
Three options packs are available, including the Business Pack ($3200), Trade Pack ($1200) and Peace of Mind Pack ($1500), while individual options include an extra 200kg payload for SWB grades, a digital rear-view mirror, wireless smartphone charging, extra advanced driver assist features, and glazed sliding doors.
