Elon Musk’s Grok artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot assistant is officially rolling out to Tesla vehicles in Australia in a staggered series of over-the-air software updates over the coming days.

Developed by xAI, which Musk is the founder and the CEO of, Grok is capable of delivering answers to a range of prompts and can also be used to initiate navigation commands in Teslas on the move.

It’s still in Beta form currently and isn’t able to control things such as media or the climate control, at least for now.

Grok was developed as a rival to the likes of ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude, among others. Many carmakers have been attempting to implement AI into their vehicles to make them more "software-defined."

The first Australian-specification Tesla vehicles to receive Grok are vehicles equipped with the Hardware 3 (HW3) system. It’s soon being rolled out to vehicles equipped with the latest HW4 system as well.

This means that Tesla Model 3, Model Y, Model S and Model X vehicles with an AMD processor, vehicle software version 2025.26 or later and Premium Connectivity or Wi-Fi connection will be able to access Grok.

Eligible customers will be informed of this update through their Tesla smartphone companion app.

Grok was first rolled out to Tesla vehicles in the US back in mid-2025. You’re able to configure Grok’s voice and personality, ranging from ‘Storyteller’ to ‘Unhinged’.

There has also been backlash and a number of controversies regarding with Grok, including antisemitic responses to prompts and sexually explicit generated imagery.

All interactions with Grok are claimed to be “securely processed” by xAI and remain anonymous to Tesla and are not linked to the person or their vehicle.
