China's Toyota Land Cruiser is ready to launch! New MG Gloster 2021 is more powerful than Prado and more tech-savvy than Fortuner

MG is readying a ladder-frame LandCruiser Prado and Fortuner rival called the Gloster, with the seven-seat SUV targeting an October launch in India.

Based on the LDV D90, the Gloster - named for a British WWII jet fighter, the Gloster Meteor - promises "best-in class features, luxurious interiors and new benchmarks", all riding on a ladder-frame chassis that should deliver serious off-road credibility.

"We are devoted to innovation in autotech and hope you will be able to see the same in our upcoming launch of Gloster. Least to say, we are quite excited," says MG India president and MD Rajeev Chaba.

But the big news is under the bonnet, where MG has chosen to fit the most powerful diesel engine at its disposal - one that promises to out-punch its more well-known rivals.

International reports suggest the Gloster will get a choice of engines, but will launch with a 2.0-litre twin-turbo-diesel good for 162kW and 480Nm - making it more powerful than the Toyota Fortuner, the Toyota LandCruiser Prado, and the five-cylinder Ford Everest.

That engine will pair with an eight-speed automatic that sends power to all four wheels, and the Gloster is also equipped with Terrain Selection off-road drive modes, too.

Inside, there's a 12.3-inch touchscreen, a panoramic sunroof, a digital driver display and a premium-feeling interior, while safety equipment should include AEB, front collision warning and an an autonomous parking system.

Finally, the Gloster measures 5005mm in length, 1932mm in width and 1875mm in height, and rides on a 2950mm wheelbase.

The price? The Gloster is expected to start from around $75k in India, with a local debut yet to be confirmed.
