Can the 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV get a top safety rating? Toyota RAV4 hybrid, MG HS and Ford Escape PHEV rival could get safety score at launch

The 2.5-litre Outlander achieved high marks from ANCAP but the PHEV will have to wait.

The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is expected to get a crash safety rating when it eventually arrives on Australian shores in the first half of the year.

Earlier this week, all 2.5-litre petrol versions of the Outlander were awarded a maximum five-star rating from the Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP).

The petrol Outlander went on sale in Australia November last year, but the testing was delayed because of COVID-related issues.

The rating for the plug-in hybrid version is now expected when the eco model goes on sale, according to a Mitsubishi Motors Australia spokesperson.

“Rating for the PHEV is yet to come so we’ll all have to wait closer to launch for that,” they said.

ANCAP chief executive officer Carla Hoorweg confirmed that the Outlander PHEV was yet to be tested, but added when it “arrives into the Australian and New Zealand markets, it will become eligible for assessment by ANCAP”.

To test additional variants of a model line that may have different powertrain or significant mechanical changes, ANCAP requires additional technical information from the manufacturer to consider whether the variants will be covered by the same rating.

Just last week Toyota Australia announced it would not be seeking an ANCAP rating for GR Sport versions of its hot-selling LandCruiser 300 Series, despite all other variants achieving five-stars.

Mitsubishi’s chances of scoring a five-star rating for the plug-in Outlander look good, given the PHEV version of the smaller Eclipse Cross SUV is covered by the same five-star score as the petrol version, despite going on sale three years after it was tested.

As previously reported, the petrol-powered Outlander scored five stars, achieving 83 per cent for the Adult Occupant Protection tests, 92 per cent for the Child Occupant Protection, 81 per cent in Vulnerable Road User and 83 per cent for safety Assist.
