With so many new brands and models entering what appears to be a softening new car market, what started as a price skirmish is quickly evolving into all out war, with BYD announcing further reductions on cost-of-entry to some of its most popular models.

Hot on the heels of tactical price reductions from Chery, GWM, Jeep, MG and others, Chinese giant BYD has launched a second wave of cuts to its local line-up.

The brand’s local importer EVDirect recently repositioned the Dolphin compact hatch, making it the most affordable EV in the Australian new car market, at the same time introducing a substantially cheaper version of its increasingly popular Atto 3 mid-size EV SUV.

Now, the focus is on the Seal EV sedan and Sealion 6 plug-in hybrid medium SUV with MY25 price tags cut by between five and six per cent.

The entry-grade Seal Dynamic is close to $3000 cheaper with all three models in the line-up now fitted with a (much-needed) electronic sunshade for the panoramic roof as standard, while the top-spec Performance model now features BYD’s ‘DiSus-C’ (Intelligent Damping Body Control System).

The entry-level Sealion 6 Dynamic is now $3000 cheaper, while the flagship premium model’s price is unchanged.

In announcing the new price list EVDirect CEO David Smitherman said, “By offering exceptional value without compromising on quality or innovation, we’re helping more drivers make the switch to sustainable transportation, driving a cleaner and greener future for Australia”.

“Having been to BYD headquarters in China, I’ve seen the incredible scale of operation that ultimately underpins these great prices.

“As that scale continues to grow — and as we continue to make breakthroughs in innovation and technology - Australian drivers are the big winners,” he said.
