BMW won't be extending its warranty beyond the three-year mark anytime soon, saying its customers aren't asking for longer manufacturer coverage, but for a "durable product that lasts".
While most mainstream brands have moved to a five- or even seven-year warranty, and while fellow premium player Lexus offers four years of standard coverage, the three key German (including Audi and Mercedes) players have steadfastly stuck to a three-year coverage plan for their customers. Jaguar, though, recently threw down the gauntlet in offering five years of warranty on its new I-Pace EV EUV.
And while we're all waiting to see which of the German premium brands will blink first, it seems the stalemate won't be ending anytime soon, at least in BMW's HQ.
Speaking at the local unveiling of BMW's new 8 Series Coupe and Convertible, new(it) group CEO Vikram Pawah told carsguide that his customers were more concerned with buying a "durable" product than in any extension of the warranty period.
"I look at it from a customer view point, so what are customers really looking for? They’re looking for a durable product that lasts. Then you’re looking after them," he said.
"As long as you’re providing that, I don’t think the number of years is going to matter. As long as the product is durable and you’re looking after them if something happens, which we do, then three or four years (warranty), customers don’t worry about it. That’s not their decision-making point.
"That’s what it means for our customers, that’s what they’ve been saying. And there’s no change on the cards."
BMW does offer condition-based servicing (CBS), which swaps the prescribed service intervals for an intelligent alternative, with your vehicle monitoring wear and tear and alerting you when it requires servicing, rather sticking with arbitrary timings.
