Audi S6 sedan 2020 pricing and specs detailed: Mercedes-AMG E53 rival improves value equation

Audi Australia has confirmed the new-generation S6 large sedan is priced from $149,900 plus on-road costs, with it a presenting a better value proposition than before.

Compared to its predecessor, the new S6 sedan is $21,480 cheaper, while Audi Australia claims it has also added $20,000 worth of standard equipment.

This list includes speed-sensitive electric power steering, adaptive air suspension, an S body kit, metallic paintwork, black exterior trim, dusk-sensing lights, HD Matrix LED headlights, LED daytime running lights, rain-sensing windshield wipers, 21-inch alloy wheels with a space-saver spare, 400mm front and 350mm rear brake discs with red callipers, soft-close doors, auto-folding side mirrors with heating, rear privacy glass and a hands-free power-operated bootlid with a spoiler.

Inside, 10.1- and 8.6-inch touchscreens, satellite navigation with live traffic, Android Auto and wireless Apple CarPlay support, digital radio, a 705W Bang & Olufsen 3D sound system with 16 speakers, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a windshield-projected head-up display, a panoramic sunroof, a wireless smartphone charger, keyless entry and start, power-adjustable front sports seats with heating, a sports steering wheel with paddle-shifters, a power-adjustable steering column, four-zone climate control, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, Valcona and Nappa leather upholstery and LED ambient lighting feature.

Advanced driver-assist systems extend to autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-keep and steering assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control with stop and go functionality, high-beam assist, driver attention alert, hill-start assist, tyre pressure monitoring, surround-view cameras and front and rear parking sensors.

Buyers can opt for the $7700 Dynamic Package that bundles in variable-ratio electric power steering, a rear limited-slip differential and all-wheel steering.

As reported, the new S6 sedan is powered by a 2.9-litre twin-turbo V6 petrol engine that produces 331kW of power from 5700-6700rpm and 600Nm of torque from 1900-5000rpm.

The S6 sedan has a hands-free power-operated bootlid with a spoiler.

This unit is mated to a 48V mild-hybrid system that includes an Electric-Powered Compressor (EPC) that helps to reduce its turbo lag. This set-up can also coast for up to 40 seconds between 55km/h and 160km/h, and engages stop-start from 22km/h.

An eight-speed torque-converter automatic transmission is responsible for swapping gears, while drive is sent to all four wheels via Audi’s rear-biased quattro system.

This combination helps the Mercedes-AMG E53 sedan ($173,800) rival to sprint from a standstill to 100km/h in 4.5 seconds, while its top speed is electronically limited to 250km/h.

Inside, 10.1- and 8.6-inch touchscreens are powered by Audi's latest multimedia system.

Fuel consumption on the combined-cycle test (ADR 81/02) is 8.4 litres per 100 kilometres, while claimed carbon dioxide emissions are 197 grams per kilometre.

While an Avant wagon version of the S6 is available overseas, Audi Australia says it won’t be joining the sedan anytime soon, although it will be reassessing buyer interest following the A6 Allroad and RS6 Avant’s upcoming releases.
