Another new Chinese car brand is coming to Australia this year.
Deepal will launch Down Under in the fourth quarter of this year and will be distributed by Inchcape, which is the importer for other brands such as Foton utes, Subaru and Peugeot.
Deepal is an electric car brand made by Changan, one of the largest state-owned carmakers in China.
Shen Xinghua, President of Changan Automobile Asia-Pacific (APAC) Region said: “We have studied the Australian market for several years as Changan sees Australia as a strategic market. Collaborating with Inchcape and introducing our successful Deepal brand and product, we have strong confidence that we can deliver new energy mobility and better services to Australian customers.”
The first product will be the S07 electric SUV to rival the Tesla Model Y and Toyota bZ4X.
Earlier this year the Deepal S07 was spotted in Australian government homologation document, which is a critical step before being approved for sale.
The Deepal S07 is a five-seater battery electric vehicle measuring 4750mm long by 1930mm wide by 1625mm tall.
There are no official details on the Australian version yet, but in Thailand the S07 is equipped with a 190kW/320Nm electric motor driving the rear wheels and a 66.8kWh lithium-ion battery delivering a 485km driving range.
Changan and Deepal have several partnerships with mainstream brands including Ford and Mazda.
The Deepal S07 and the L07 sedan form the basis of two next-gen Mazda electric cars in China.
The L07 is the coming Mazda EZ-6, which is officially only slated for sale in China but is reported to be a global vehicle with Europe the next stop.
The S07 is likely the base for a production version of the Arata concept, which was shown at the 2024 Beijing motor show.
The arrival of Deepal is leading to a very crowded Australian car market that will soon have about 70 different brands on sale.
Deepal is just the latest in a long line of new Chinese brands that have launched or announced plans to.
These include carmakers such as Aion, BYD, GAC, Geely, JAC, Jaecoo, Leapmotor, Smart, Skywell, Xpeng and Zeekr.
