2022 Tesla Model S price and features: Huge cost increase for Porsche Taycan and Audi e-tron GT rival's incoming facelift

The Plaid sits atop the new Model S line-up.

Local deliveries haven’t even started yet, but Tesla Australia has dramatically increased the pricing of the Model S large sedan’s second facelift, which is still some time away.

When the facelifted Model S was revealed in January, its entry-level Long Range (now $162,559 plus on-road costs) and range-topping Plaid (now $222,409) variants were $15,269 cheaper than they are today.

Tesla Australia changes pricing – in either direction – on a regular basis, but this particular shift also takes into account the 2021-2022 financial year’s $2104-higher luxury car tax (LCT) threshold for fuel-efficient vehicles ($79,659).

As reported, the Porsche Taycan and Audi e-tron GT rival’s second facelift is due here at the end of next year and doesn’t look too different outside (new front bumpers, alloy wheels and black trim), although it is dramatically so inside, with its cockpit completely redesigned.

The obvious highlight is the rectangular steering wheel that’s stalkless. Ahead of it still is a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, while a now-horizontal 17.0-inch touchscreen is to the side.

An 8.0-inch touchscreen now features in the second row, at the rear of the centre console, allowing occupants to play with Tesla’s latest multimedia system, too. Wireless chargers and USB-C ports also feature throughout alongside a 960W sound system with 22 speakers.

For reference, the 500kW dual-motor Long Range Plus range-opener has been renamed Long Range, while the dual-motor Performance flagship has been replaced by the 761kW tri-motor Plaid.

The Long Range has a range (WLTP) of 652km and completes the zero-to-100km/h sprint in 3.2 seconds, while the Plaid can travel 637km between charges and takes 2.1s to hit triple digits.
