2022 Subaru Forester goes hardcore! Wilderness makeover puts Toyota RAV4, Mazda CX-5, Nissan X-Trail, Mitsubishi Outlander and Hyundai Tucson on notice

The Forester will be the second Subaru model to get a Wilderness makeover.

Subaru is giving the recently facelifted Forester a tough makeover, with the new Wilderness grade set to take the mid-size SUV to the next level.

Scheduled to be revealed in the US on September 2 (local time), the Forester Wilderness will be the second Wilderness model from Subaru, following in the tyre tracks of the larger Outback Wilderness, which was unveiled in March.

While Subaru has now teased the Forester Wilderness with two images – including the above shot of its unique grille – and a video, little else is known about the model, although it will likely stick to the Outback Wilderness’ formula.

As such, expect the Forester Wilderness to also feature bespoke bumpers, exclusive alloy wheels, all-terrain tyres, branded side cladding, reinforced roof racks, matte-black exterior trim and specific badging at minimum.

The Forester Wilderness could also go a step further with increased ground clearance via longer springs and shock absorbers, while improved approach, breakover and departure angles might come courtesy of the bespoke bumpers.

Inside, the Forester Wilderness could emulate the Outback Wilderness’ StarTex water-repellent upholstery with copper stitching, dark headliner, Gunmetal Grey trim, brushed aluminium pedals, all-weather floor mats and a waterproof boot tray.

So, will the Forester Wilderness come to Australia to bother the Toyota RAV4, Mazda CX-5, Nissan X-Trail, Mitsubishi Outlander and Hyundai Tucson? Well, Subaru says the emerging Wilderness line-up “hasn’t been ruled out” locally, so it’s a chance. Stay tuned.
