2022 Nissan Z still set for big reveal! Wait almost over for new Toyota Supra rival - but will its twin-turbo V6 live up to its rumoured 400Z name?

The Z Proto (pictured) is expected to look nearly identical to the Z.

This month’s New York motor show may have been cancelled at the proverbial last minute, but that doesn’t mean Nissan fans will have to wait even longer for the new Z sports car to be revealed.

Indeed, Nissan has confirmed it will still unveil the 370Z’s eagerly anticipated successor this Wednesday (August 18) at 10.00am AEST, although its debut is now expected to take place digitally, instead of in person in the US.

So, what should we expect from the Z? Well, given the new Toyota Supra rival was widely rumoured to called 400Z but isn’t, the door is open for multiple in-house tunes of its 3.0-litre twin-turbo petrol V6.

When the near-production Z Proto was revealed last September, it confirmed the Z’s engine but not its outputs. That said, the unit produces up to 298kW of power and 475Nm of torque under the bonnets of Infiniti's related Q50 and Q60 Red Sport.

While the 400Z name would’ve been a perfect fit given 298kW is 400hp in the old money, Nissan may have gone with Z instead because caters for a Nismo flagship with even more power – or maybe a ‘regular’ variant with less or more.

Either way, there’s plenty to look forward with the Z, including its available manual and torque-converter automatic transmissions, which will have the task of sending drive to the rear wheels.

While an Australian launch for the Z is yet to be officially pencilled in, it is expected to enter local showrooms within the next 12 months, so get excited.
